A Message from the Founder
In February 2006, I almost died from drugs and alcohol, and I am sober today because of the great professional help I had, the community that reached out to me then and continues to support me now, as well as the constant contact and accountability that community provided to me. OneRecovery is the embodiment of all those experiences, offering a means to recreate what worked for me and what continues to work for hundreds of thousands of others.
The need for OneRecovery came from the tremendous agony I felt before I got sober to the experiences during my recovery process and finally to all the blessings I have been given since becoming sober. In other words, this company started because I was lucky enough to live when I should have died. The support I was freely given in my sobriety has been a gift that I wanted to–and needed to–give back to others.
A little over a year after becoming sober, a mentor helped point out that 90% of my satisfaction in life came from helping others in recovery, yet only 10% of my actual time was spent in that service. “What would your life look like if 90% of your time was spent doing the things that brought you 90% of your satisfaction?” he asked. That simple question challenged me to ultimately create a company that is fundamentally based on the principle of helping other people. Now, I am able to do what I love every day through OneRecovery, a social networking “social solutioning” healing platform that encourages people to work together to create more meaningful, fulfilling and abstinent lives.
I firmly believe I was meant to create this company, because OneRecovery is a manifestation of every lesson I have ever learned in my professional and personal life. All of my professional and personal experiences to date have fully prepared me for the role as CEO and founder. I was able to learn about smart finances as an investment banker in New York; understand how to form a strong and viable start-up company as a technology venture capitalist; grasp the struggles of recovery and the importance of aftercare as a regional alumni volunteer for the treatment center I attended; and persevere no matter what the odds based on my own experiences coming back from my darkest days. Now, I have a solid background in finance, I’m armed with the knowledge of how to invest in cutting-edge technologies, and I understand the keys to circumventing obstacles one might encounter in recovery. With a strong management team, a reputable Board of Advisors and a team of employees–many of whom have undergone their own recovery process–we all share the vision of using social networking solutions to build relationships that can help save lives.
In looking at what we have built, and what we are planning on building, OneRecovery doesn’t pretend to have all of the answers. What we do have however, is an unwavering commitment to create the tools necessary for individuals to overcome addiction from drugs, alcohol and eating disorders in order to live truly fulfilling lives. For all the people who have been lost to these overwhelming diseases, we are here to make a better world a reality.
OneRecovery is always listening and incorporating the changes that can enhance our solution to save more people. We ask for your help in that mission. Please let us know how to better serve, and we will. With your contributions and suggestions, we can save more lives together.
Live well,
David Metzler
